Moving Beyond Home Modifications: Using Smart Home Technology to Support Safe Living for Older Adults
Brief Summary
This project examines the potential of utilizing smart home technology to address the needs of vulnerable populations residing in challenging housing environments. The HHL will identify, evaluate, and develop emerging smart home safety technology solutions that reduce the risk of falls and unintentional injuries in low-income public senior housing.
Objectives
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative research on unintentional injuries related to fall risk in the home and community setting, that will assess the current policy and regulatory landscape and scalability of identified smart home safety technology injury mitigation interventions for low-income older adults living in public housing
- Evaluate the usability and performance of emerging smart home safety technologies that could be integrated into public housing to reduce fall-related unintentional injuries
- Develop, pilot, and prepare an implementation strategy for smart home safety technology to reduce fall risk in public housing
Results
This study is currently in progress.
Community Impact
Enhance the acceptance and implementation of smart safety home technology in low-income and public housing environments, and address key knowledge gaps related to the most prevalent and costly unintentional injury and fall hazard risks.
