Dr. O’Donnell and Dr. Faieta, along with co-authors Max Likens, Katie Bacco, Jenn McCartney, and Caleb Moon, presented their team’s research poster on non-pharmacological and technology-based solutions for supporting older adults with dementia at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London in July.
Their poster, “Development of a Database of Non-pharmacological Interventions and Technology-mediated Supports for Individuals with ADRD,” introduces a systematically curated database of over 220 technology-based products and supports for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and their caregivers. Using the Person-Environment-Occupation model, the team catalogued interventions by symptom domain, evidence level, cost, and intended user to map the current landscape of dementia care technology.
Through cataloguing the available solutions, their team has also worked to identify gaps. For example, they point out that most available products target memory and wandering, while symptoms like agitation, depression, and dementia-related urinary incontinence remain largely unaddressed, and only a small fraction of products have been tested in clinical trials. The team’s next step is to turn this database into a platform that helps clinicians and caregivers find evidence-based, personalized recommendations for non-pharmacological dementia care.
